Catherine Howard’s marriage to Henry VIII began in 1540, shortly after the annulment of Henry’s marriage to Anne of Cleves. Catherine was much younger than Henry and was a cousin of his second wife, Anne Boleyn, who had been executed on charges of adultery and treason. The union with Catherine was initially welcomed by Henry, who was enamored with her youth and beauty.
However, within a year of their marriage, allegations of Catherine’s past and present infidelities surfaced. Catherine Howard was subsequently confined to the Tower of London on charges of adultery and treason. Despite her pleas for mercy and attempts to defend her actions, she was found guilty. In February 1542, Catherine Howard was executed, meeting the same fate as her cousin Anne Boleyn.

Her downfall and execution contributed to King Henry VIII’s reputation for marital brutality and the period’s harsh attitudes toward female sexuality and agency.
