On This Day, March 23, 1775, Patrick Henry delivered one of the most famous orations in American history that rallied revolutionary support among Virginians. In a speech to the Virginia Convention, Henry proclaimed the immortal words “Give me liberty, or give me death!”
With tensions escalating between the American colonies and Britain, his impassioned rhetoric argued for mobilizing the militia in defense of colonial rights against British oppression.
The climax was Henry’s instantly legendary closing line: “What is it that gentlemen wish? What would they have? Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!”
